Pregnancy and Postpartum Mood Disorders

One of the most important steps you can take is ask for help. Meeting with a professional who is trained in treating pregnancy and postpartum mood disorders is the first step.  Also, Postpartum Support groups can be very helpful.  It is nice to meet with other moms and know that you are not alone.

MFB Counseling specializes in treating pregnancy and postpartum mood disorders.  During pregnancy, approximately, 10% of pregnant women have issues with depression and/or anxiety. 20% percent of women, or 1 in every 5 women, experience anxiety and/or depression after childbirth. This is one of the highest risk times for women to experience anxiety or depression. Think about it, you have no sleep, your life feels upside down, you are exhausted, getting out of the house can be a struggle,(or even taking a shower) and getting used to your first child or learning to juggle two or more children can be quite stressful.  Being a new parent, can also affect your relationship with your partner.  It is hard to find time to talk to each other.  Not only does this affect women; but some dads go through a major adjustment to fatherhood and some men experience postpartum adjustment issues, as well as anxiety and depression.

Most women do not seek treatment for pregnancy and postpartum depression and anxiety issues, because they feel alone and think  "I should be able to handle it" and feel guilty and very isolated.

There is still a conspiracy of silence that stops women from getting help. With help, you can feel better and feel like yourself again.
